Thematic/concept music video

Concept music videos are based around a single idea or concept which are usually obscure and can be surreal for an audience. The unusual themes of the music videos can draw lots of attention and sometimes these music videos can create a buzz on social media and increase the popularity of the song itself. Sia's music video for 'Elastic Heart' is a concept music video which drew a large amount of attention due to the obscure content of the video and also the main stars of the video Shia LeBeouf and Maddie Ziegler. It is said that a successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at who or what is on the screen, the video for Chandelier successfully does this.

Concept videos can also be videos which follow a theme (thematic). A theme can be something as simple as colour or a setting for example, heavy metal bands often have concert clips whilst dance routines are almost the norm for pop videos.

Symbolic objects are often used within videos to build up meaning without words, these symbols may be related to the lyrics of the song however, this is not essential. lots of shots are used in sequence to create meaning which is often contradictory to the song itself and the meaning that the artist intended. Lighting can be used to create mood as dim lighting can make a video instantly seem more emotional or in another context more moody. Fast shots can be used to build up meanings and keep the audience interested.
