Performance Music Videos


Performance videos usually focus on live performances by and artist or band. the video will include a variety of angles of the artist and sometimes the audience. Performance videos do not usually have a narrative as they focus more on the music itself. these types of videos are often used within the rock genre and tend to be favoured over a narrative or thematic style video. Performance videos may be made to build a relationship with the audience or even to emphasise the performer's star quality.

Bon Jovi's "livin' on a prayer" music video is a classic example of a Performance Music video and was made in . The video shows multiple angles of the band members performing and parts of their performance are lip synced with the track Livin' On A Prayer, the audience are also shown during the video which makes the audience watching the music video feel even more involved within the video itself. the first half of the video is in Black and White when the band is rehearsing the second half of the video which is the performance to the audience is in colour.




Another example of a Performance Music Video is 30 Seconds To Mars' "Closer To The Edge". the music video. Within this video clips are shown of 30 Seconds To Mars performing in their concerts around the world, the song 'Closer To The Edge' being performed in particular and them meeting their fans. Iconography plays a key part in this Performance Music Video, the branding which surrounds the lead singer such as his bright pink hair and visuals of the fans singing along with passion make Jared Leto seem to have a respected status by many. 30 Seconds to Mars take fan interaction to the next level within this video as clips of interviews with fans are shown as they talk about how much music means to them which adds to the involvement of fans with the band and also makes the video more meaningful.
